Last Friday, May 18, the fundraising event Cielo Latino took place at the Cipriani Wall Street in New York. Former Miss Universe, Dayana Mendoza, and current titleholder from Angola, Leila Lopes, attended the event organised by The Latino Commission on AIDS.
The annual event which raises funds for the initiatives of The Latino Commission on AIDS to combat HIV/AIDS is themed “El VIH No Tiene Fronteras” (HIV Has No Borders).
Miss Mendoza and Miss Lopes were amongst the distinguished guests in the successful event. Both queens are ‘madrinas’ of the organisation. Aside from them, two former Miss Universe queens were also named as such, namely, Ximena Navarrete of Mexico (2010) and Stefania Fernandez of Venezuela (2009).
Miss Universe 2008, Dayana Mendoza, was amongst the honorees named in the event who received the Ilka Award. Other recipients of the award were Jesus Aguais, Director of AID FOR AIDS International; Donna Futterman, MD, Director of Adolescent AIDS Program at Montefiore Hospital; and the HIV Team at Merck.
Miss Mendoza was elated to accept the award and said “This recognition inspires me to continue working to promote HIV/AIDS awareness, education, and HIV testing initiatives to the Latino/Hispanic community in the United States and throughout Latin America and Caribbean nations.”
Meanwhile, current titleholder, Miss Lopes, was named newest madrina of The Latino Commission on AIDS on April 20. Apart from being a madrina, she is also named UNCCD Drylands Ambassador.
