In preparation for the World Malaria Day on the 25th of April, United Nations hosted a reception on Monday night at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. The aptly called NETworking reception was a collaborative effort of the UN Foundation, Variety Magazine and Ray Chambers, Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Malaria.
Present in the event was the current Miss Universe titleholder, Leila Lopes, who is also the UNCCD Drylands Ambassador. She previously spoke at the UNCCD Conference last March 27, 2012 held at the Dag Hammarskjöld Library Auditorium of the UN Headquarters in the same city. Other reputable guests were former NBA player, Shaquile O’Neal, and Princess Astrid of Belgium.
The event was meant to bring together different sectors into partnerships with the UN to combat malaria, one of the dreaded mosquito-borne diseases worldwide.
